Nivolumab with or without ipilimumab: ten-year outcomes

Fixed release · explorer-2026-09-11

At ten years, estimated overall survival was 43% with nivolumab plus ipilimumab, 37% with nivolumab, and 19% with ipilimumab.

Estimated survival at 10 years

Overall survival · percentage alive in each trial group

Nivolumab + ipilimumab43%

Study group: 314 participants · 95% confidence interval 38%–49%

Nivolumab37%

Study group: 316 participants · 95% confidence interval 32%–43%

Ipilimumab19%

Study group: 315 participants · 95% confidence interval 15%–24%

The small black line shows uncertainty (95% confidence interval), where available. These estimates describe study groups, not an individual’s chance of survival.

Overall-survival HR versus ipilimumab: 0.53 (95% CI 0.44–0.65) for the combination; 0.63 (0.52–0.76) for nivolumab.

Grade 3–4 treatment-related adverse events

Separate 2017 report; cutoff May 24, 2017; minimum follow-up 36 months. Lower percentages mean fewer reported severe events.

Put the research in context

Who was studied?

Compare the reported population with what you know. It is fine to be unsure—those are useful questions for your care team.

These are reported population details, not a complete list of eligibility criteria. Who could enroll, who participated, and whose results were analyzed can differ. This checklist does not score your match, recommend treatment, or determine trial eligibility.

Study design & endpoints

Double-blind, randomized phase 3 trial; 945 participants in three groups.

Co-primary endpoints: overall survival and progression-free survival, each nivolumab group versus ipilimumab.

What the chart cannot tell you

  • The trial was not designed or powered to compare the combination directly with nivolumab alone. That comparison is descriptive.
  • Final confidence intervals were not adjusted for multiple comparisons.
  • The harms displayed here are from the earlier 2017 report, not ten-year cumulative rates.

Results are group estimates, not a personalized forecast, treatment recommendation, or confirmation of trial eligibility.
